Get a Job

I've been in business for the last 10 years so I really haven't had to get a job since before 1999.  But, I do have people calling me for work on a regular basis.  As a business owner, let me give some practical advise on getting the right job.

First, do a brain storm list of all your transferable job skills, college education, and community leadership experience.  Transferable jobs skills are things like driving tractors to repairing computers.  Also include being a back yard mechanic or even basic web design and Microsoft Office experience.  Include everything you can think of.

Second, throw all your newspapers away.  Pick-up your local phone book and search businesses you would like to work for.  Give these business a call to determine where you can send a resume.  Also, do your own background check on these businesses to discover what they are looking for in an employee.

Next, write your resume geared to the businesses you would like to work for.  Never lie on a resume.  If you lie, you will be discovered immediately by experienced HR people.

Just remember one thing.  The best local jobs are found in the phone book.  If you can't find a job there, then go state wide, and then national, and then global.  If you still can't find a job, start your own business.  Most everything is marketable, you just have to find the market for your product.  If you still can't find a job then keep trying.

In today's global economy, there is no reason for an indiviual to be without a means of earning an honest living.  Government does not create jobs.  It is the people who start businesses, create opportunity, and hire employees.

So, I hope this is not so simple as to be deemed foolishness.  Do what it takes.  Even cleaning toilets for a living is a start and can actually add some dignity to an individual.  I have cleaned toilets, mowed lawns, shoveled snow, and roofed houses as well as build airplanes.  I have even been a telephone solicitor.  Now, I own my business.  It is a small business, but it is mine.  Now I am in the position of creating jobs instead of searching for one.
